+ Sharing your own little tricks... :) +

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 20, 2009, 10:38 AM

Hello everyone!

A nice artist I watch here on DA wrote something in her journal that reminded me about something I've been wanting to write here for a long time (but never did because I procrastinate too much. So there.)

How do you feel about showing to others the way you work, sharing your own little tricks and your usual working methods?
I get asked quite often questions like "how did you do this?" or "would you make a tutorial about your technique for that?", and these are always hard to answer.
I like explaining how I work, and I think it's important to share tips and to explain techniques to other artists, because while learning through trial and error is great, sometimes you could just have saved yourself a lot of time if somebody had told you right away that what you're doing is never going to work. Plus, it's important for the emulation, and I personnally appreciate it when I ask a question and receive an answer, so I feel it's only right to do the same. But on the other hand... well, like everyone else, I have my special little secrets that I don't necessarily want to share, because I worked hard to develop them and they're what makes my work distinctive. So sometimes I'm nagged between wanting to help and wanting to say "Hmmm, why don't you try and work it out by yourself? ;) "...!
I've also noticed that self-taught artists are usually more protective of their techniques than artists who have a solid art classes background - and also that artists become more protective when their notoriety grows.

So, what's your stand on this matter? Are you the type of artist who will gladly explain how they do something from A to Z, or rather the type who prefer to keep their little tricks to themselves? :)

[EDIT] Completely unrelated to this journal but, I did something silly while using the drag-and-drop feature to organize the folders in my gallery and added by mistake one of my artworks to my own favourites... xD;; I don't like my own work THAT much, thank you, so I'd like to remove it from my favourites, but the problem is that you don't have the "Remove favourite" button on your own artwork. Does anybody have any idea on how I can do this? Thank you!

i love reading tutorials they help people soo much. I'm not sure if traditional artists are more protective of their own style than digital artist, but i think helping to expand anothers style is really interesting. Even with the same tutorial no two things ever will exactly alike :D

I guess I'd like to share tips, if asked ^^ Some friends ask how to do certain things in class and I'll gladly tell them, so it would be the same for online :3 but if I had any little special tricks up my sleeve, I don't think I'd hand them out so willingly, because if I had developed it myself *as you have ^^*, then I'd feel like I was just handing the person all that they need :/ And with art, people should develop by themselves at some point, and get their own little tricks without being told ^^ of course, those tricks may help people to develop their own tricks :3

All my tricks I've learnt from looking at works and processes of artists I admire, so I'm quite happy to show someone a trick or two if it'll help them out.

If self taught artists wants to keep their techniques to themselves, that's fair. On the other hand if you were really keen on learning said artists' techniques, you'll be experimenting and looking at similar styles to study, and in the process develop your own techniques.

I absolutely support things like videotutorials or a live-conference by a desk-support programm. One Deviant made a video in real time about 2 hours and i learned a huge amount by this video. But I would never try to copy the artists who teached me. And I like to help other people, its a big fun :)
moreover: no one will ever get the big skill like yours by just one tutorial. ;)

I guess I would be a more quiet person with art technique...I've been working hard and ever so slowly developing and working at trying to get to a high level all by myself, as I feel being ';programed' by an art studio and such would make me feel my work is not as special, as I would then be forced under it's tuition to conform to their standards of how-to-learn. Though I've only had a total of 4, 5 years of experience if you add my 16 years of life together I too have secrets to my technique but not alot yet.

I freely give and ask for help. All the artists I know in real life, well we are a big supportive group who always help eachother out.

What I noticed from the other post on this, is I think digital artists are more protective then traditional artists. I think this stems from digital being a rather new medium compared to drawing, painting, etc....so there are new techniques that no one knows, whereas in painting, well it's all been done before to varying degrees, lol.

I agree with your post, 100% :D

Well it depends actually. I agree with what you're saying. I love tutorials because they help me see things that I hadn't seen before. But I've only ever used them for digital and just to get started. Once I got the hang of it, I'm fine on my own. But my art on the otherhand would be harder for me to explain. I don't have very much art to start with. And the few that I do are either very basic, or something I'm not really willing to share. So yeah. If you did a tutorial, I might read it. Because I know you do a lot of traditional stuff, and that's where I lack the most. But I would respect your decision not to, if that's what you chose to do. :D

Hm, I like helping people too much to be secretive about what I do. Besides, my own style is so widely varied because I like so many different things it would be a bit hard to copy. I've made one or two basic tutorials but I hesitate over making any more just because I'm always learning and trying new things as well, so it's rarely the same twice for me.

I find, personally, that those little "extras" generally only work for me.. I've tried to explain them to people, in person, who are as good if not better seamstresses than me, but they can't understand what I'm telling them to do, or why it would be a "bonus", so I don't even bother with those any more. Sometimes, you develop your best way of doing something, and that's all it is - your best way, not the best way.

And, if something is a "signature" of yours, you don't have to share. I tell people I use millinery wire and sizing for hats, but I don't tell them how I make my sizing, my chemical formula/mixing ratio, because it works for me, and that's that.

I am more than happy to give tips for whomever wants them, but I will not take the time to explain A-Z how to do something - there needs to be work on both ends for that, and if I explain exactly how to do something A-Z, they're not learning anything (I tend to think of it akin to the recent tracing controversy.)

Techniques I share, but they're definitely not the "only" or "right" way to do it, usually, they're just a shortcut, and that's that. :D

I rambled a lot, didn't I? ^^; Sorry!
